Sabotaging the upcoming direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians
Why would any Palestinian group do such a thing right before the planned direct negotiations between Israel and the PA? Such stupid acts are intended to derail the peace efforts. So the perpetrators (The Qassam Brigades, in this case) and their bosses must have huge vested interest in the status quo of continued violence and suffering. They must be condemned by all, and stopped by the Palestinians themselves…
BTW, regarding the mentioned direct talks, it should be said that if both sides keep insisting on getting every thing they deem to be their right, then we are in for violence and suffering for a very very long time. Compromise is necessary for both sides to achieve true peace...
Unfortunately, sometimes people who are caught in a deadly crisis can be so entrenched in the deadlock that it would only take outsider(s) to wake them up from their nightmare. In this case, the US can be that outsider, if and only if they broker these planned talks even handedly...
Now, I know that it might be wishful thinking to expect such a behavior from the US, given the recent history of how the US carried itself out in this delicate matter of Israel-Palestine problem. But our best hope is that an increasingly significant portion of the US Jewry (see J Street, for instance) seems to have already realized that a true peace with the Palestinians (with a two state solution) will be to the best interest of Israel itself.
That might put some sense into the US politicians who otherwise perpetually pander to the US Jewry –unfortunately not because they really care, but because they just want to look nice and get elected/re-elected.
